What is Culture Kitchen?
Culture Kitchen is the name for any of Culture Connect's projects that involves food.
Culture Kitchen allows our volunteers to showcase their cooking skills, the food of their cultures whilst gaining skills in event management, team working, customer services, teaching, catering and much much more.
Our first event as an organisation was simply called "Culture Kitchen". This was an evening of Cultural food and music developed by our volunteers and sold to the general public. The event took place in the Skylight Cafe in Newcastle on 25th May 2011. It was a great success with over 35 people attending. The event raised in excess of £400 for Culture Connect.
More importantly though, the event was a chance for us to test our concept that food was a great way to bring people together. With an extensive menu covering dishes from countries including Afghanistan, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Eritrea, our guests were amazed at the diversity and quality of what our volunteer chefs had produced. We also had performances from our Senegalese and Gambian drummer volunteers as well as musical performance from one of our Eritrean volunteers.
Throughout the Summer of 2012 we were delivering a project called the "Culture Kitchen Cooking Schools" from the Beacon on Westgate Road.
In 2013 we launched a new project called "Culture Kitchen in the Community" whilst we continue to deliver fundraiser events under the brand Food Fest Fundraisers.
